ITEZHI-TEZHI Member of Parliament Twaambo Mutinta has called for investment in boreholes in rural areas saying the demand for water has become high.
Speaking to the Scoop, Mr. Mutinta explained that the demand for water was high due to the drought that had hit the country resulting in the shortage of the commodity for both human and animal consumption.
He explained that it was important to invest in boreholes as dependency on rainfall was no longer feasible as evidenced by the current drought which is one of the effects of climate change.
“We need a long term plan that will focus on water supply but must be cheaper and more convenient,” Mr. Mutinta said.
He disclosed that over 69 water points had been set up across Itezhi-Tezhi District but noted that these were not enough as the demand was still huge due to climate change and other factors.
The lawmaker said it was important for the country to invest in climate change education as this would help citizens acquire knowledge and be able to provide solutions to calamities that may be faced in the long run.
He stated that many people in rural areas depended on rain fed water which unfortunately was not harvested, a situation that called for demand for boreholes.
He said the ultimate goal was to invest in water-related projects in rural areas.
“People need water as much as possible, so this needs to be treated with the attention it deserves,” he said.
He has also noted the need to invest in road infrastructure as a way to ease and improve business activities in rural areas.
He said it was time to transform people’s minds to start thinking outside the box by investing in capacity building by coming up with proposals that were viable and would help lift the country’s economy.
