A MATERO East resident has expressed concern over the poor sewer system in the area.

Speaking in an interview, Chongo Bwalya said the sewer system in houses behind Matero Boys Secondary School was in bad state, posing a danger of disease outbreak.

He said the stench from the affected houses was unbearable because the sewer pipes in question had serious leakages.

“The sewer system in houses along the road behind Matero Boys Secondary is very bad. You can’t bear the stench that you are subjected to when you are passing along that road. We are therefore appealing to the local authorities to move in and repair the sewer pipes as they pose a serious danger of disease outbreaks,” Mr. Bwalya said.

He added that the local authorities should move in and construct drainages as most roads had no such facilities.

He, however, blamed the residents for not allowing space for the construction of drainages as they had encroached on council gazetted spaces near the roads.

And another resident, Martin Kabwe said it was unfortunate that Matero had no street lights and tarred roads as most roads in Matero East were in bad state and unpassable during the rainy season.

“We are appealing to our Member of Parliament, Miles Sampa to lobby for the construction of tarred roads in Matero East,” Mr. Kabwe said.

He said prior to the August 12, 2021 General Elections, Mr. Sampa promised the people of Matero East that he would ensure that every untarred road was worked on but that the situation had remained the same.

“We have never seen Mr Sampa here in Matero East since he won the elections. Let him come and see for himself the state of roads. The situation is very bad,” he complained.

He also said crime has increased in Matero East because there are no street lights in the area.

He said thieves were taking advantage of the darkness to pounce on unsuspecting people and breaking into houses.

“In the past, there used to be street lights in Matero East but they were vandalised and now crime has become rampant in the area,” he said.

Efforts to get a comment from Mr Sampa proved futile within press time.
