CHIEFTAINES Nyakuleng’a of the Lunda Speaking people have warned women against giving birth at home.
Chieftainess Nyakuleng’a says home birth is associated with alot of dangers, citing the compromised health outcomes for both the child and the mother.
She explained that delivering at the hospital is essential for ensuring the safety and health of both the mother and the baby.
The Traditional leader was speaking this during an engagement meeting with clergy men and headmen organised by Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) advocacy and communication technical working group.
Chieftainess Nyakuleng’a, further urged women to prioritize hospital deliveries so that they can receive proper medical attention and care from trained healthcare professionals.
She added that doing so will significantly reduce the risks and complications that may arise during delivery.
The Traditional leader further encouraged women to take nutrition activities seriously, underscoring the importance of having a healthy child.
She warned women not adhering to good nutrition practices especially during the 1000 most critical days that would face consequences including banishment from the village.
Chieftainess Nyakuleng’a stated that she cannot preside over a Chiefdom that does not take nutrition activities seriously, saying that bad nutrition has led to many children being malnourished hence the call to women to take nutrition activities seriously.
Meanwhile, Kasesi Safe Motherhood Action Group (SMAG) Chairperson, KannethKapulu has disclosed that there is an improvement in mothers giving birth at Kasesi health facility.
MrKapulu who is also headman Kawocha, stated that since the introduction of a fine or punishment for home birth, pregnant mothers have started giving birth at the hospital for fear of being fined a K100 or being pushed.
He noted that the fear of a K100 fine or punishment has prompted pregnant mothers to comply by booking early for their pregnancy, resulting in an increase in the number of mothers delivering at health facilities.
And Mize Mini-Hospital Public health technologist, Sophie Kasongo praised the motherhood watchdog for implementing the measures, emphasizing their potential to reduce complications for pregnant women and decrease maternal deaths.
She also emphasized the importance of early hospital visits for pregnant women to prevent complications.
