A SCAM has been unearthed in which employees from Chainama College of Health Sciences who are accommodated by the institution have started renting out rooms to students from the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU).
The employees are reportedly renting out these facilities to students at exorbitant rates and opting to look for cheaper accommodation within elsewhere using rentals from these houses.
A check by The Scoop revealed that some facilities are occupied by students paying over K700 for a bed space, while the official occupants live elsewhere.
Additionally, some personnel have even extended servants’ quarters to accommodate more students.
In an interview, one of the students who sought anonymity and an occupant at the female hostel, disclosed that students were pay over K750 per bed space, with four students in some facilities sharing a room.
Another student disclosed that he had been staying in the hostel since January last year and that this was arranged through a friend, where he pays K750 per bed space and that the owner of the room now lives in Kaunda Square.
“Other students are also staying here and some rooms have more than five occupants. The owners come to collect the money monthly,” the student said.
However, Chainama Hills College Hospital Public Relations Officer George Tafuna expressed ignorance over the matter saying the institution was not aware of such activities.
In an interview, Dr. Tafuna said the institution was not aware that some officers were renting out accommodation to students from LMMU.
“If anyone is found guilty, they will face disciplinary action as this is a serious offence,” Dr. Tafuna warned.
But reliable sources disclosed that management was aware of the development and that the names of the culprits had already been submitted to the institution for disciplinary action to be taken.
