SOME Zambians, especially those that are in political space, have revolted and are purposefully abrogating law for personal political aggrandisement but this is wrong and must be condemned by all rightful thinking citizens, the Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has observed.
Speaking to The Scoop, SACCORD Acting Executive Director Arthur Muyunda said President Hakainde Hichilema had been on firm ground calling for citizens to observe the rule of law but that there were political elements that had taken it upon themselves to continue fanning confusion in the country.
He observed that President Hichilema was on point and should be commended for taking such a step which was meant to restore order and peace in the nation and that no one should be hiding in the name of a political party, religious or civil society organisation when they were breaking the law and promoting anarchy in the country.
He explained that recently, SACCORD has seen the police, who were law enforcers, watching cadres destroying public property without taking any action against them.
He said cadres had been spotted coming back in a political space and that in some instances, no arrests had been made.
He added that there was a need for law enforcers to work by executing their duties accordingly and not being selective especially to people who had been propagating confusion among citizens.
“That is what we need as a country and we don’t expect the President to go as far as wanting to invoke the Army with the belief that the Zambia police has failed. What is needed is that we need to shake the police so they do what they are supposed to do,” Mr. Muyunda said.
And Mr. Muyunda charged that the police had everything in their powers to do the correct thing unlike the current happenings in the nation.
He commended the Head of State for calling the rule of law which he said was timely, but that there were certain things that needed to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
“If it is not about the word from the President tomorrow or the other day will see cadres resurfacing again depending on who is in power. Therefore, we need to build structures which will stop such happenings in future,” he said.
