The Absa Marathon has officially been registered by World Athletics, earning a spot on the prestigious World Athletics global calendar.
Absa Bank Zambia Managing Director Mizinga Melu stated that the Absa Marathon is more than just a race; it serves as a platform for promoting health and community spirit and empowering Zambian athletes, whether they are elite competitors or participants from the general community.
“It has been our unwavering goal to raise the standard of marathons in Zambia and the region, and this recognition from World Athletics is a testament to our efforts,” said Ms. Melu.
And Zambia Athletics President, Mr. Elias Mpondela, indicated that the Absa Marathon has achieved Label Race status, marking a monumental milestone that highlights the incredible collaboration between Zambia Athletics and Absa.
Mr. Mpondela emphasized that the achievement reflects the tireless dedication of the team, who have worked relentlessly to ensure that the Absa Marathon meets the highest international standards.
“The Label Race status is a prestigious recognition that will not only elevate the profile of the Absa Marathon but also enhance Zambia’s reputation as a premier athletics destination,” he said.
He added that the Absa Marathon now serves as the benchmark for marathons in the country, being the only event with this level of certification. This recognition reflects Absa’s commitment to meeting international standards and positions the Absa Marathon as Zambia’s flagship marathon event.
This significant milestone follows official communication from World Athletics received by Zambia Athletics. The certification allows the Absa Marathon to utilize the World Rankings Competition Label in its communications and marketing, symbolizing global recognition and excellence.
This year’s marathon, which will mark its 7th edition, is scheduled to take place on September 6, 2025.
