ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) Director Christopher Malunga says he has never practiced partisan politics all his life and wonders why suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres tried to disrupt the recently held boxing event where he was accused of being a Patriotic Front (PF) cadre.
But the ruling party has parried assertions that its cadres went on rampage, destroying property at the Government Complex during an African Boxing Union Tournament.
About 10 unknown people claiming to be UPND cadres from Intercity Bus Terminal stormed the boxing event and harassed Malunga and Journalists as the police officers manning the boxing arena looked on helplessly.
The thugs further ordered journalists to delete the footage of the fracas as they went on rampage hurling insults.
“Malunga, you are a PF cadre. Why have you allowed the PF to enter this boxing arena,” they were heard saying.
But speaking after the fracas, Malunga said the assailants were UPND cadres from the Intercity Bus Terminus and described the altercation as unfortunate.
“They came and demanded for free tickets and when they entered, they caused havoc while the police looked on helplessly. I lodged a complaint to the Inspector General of Police,” Malunga said.
He said they called him a PF cadre but wondered when they had ever seen him participating in partisan politics.
“I am not a politician and never have I ever been part of politics,” he said.
But when reached for a comment, UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta said the thugs who stormed the boxing event were not ruling party cadres.
He alleged that the thugs were from the defunct Intercity Boxing Stables owned by former PF Intercity Bus Terminals “Commander” Francis Muchemwa.
He said the UPND has no cadres at Intercity Bus Terminals.
