Air Force Chiefs from 41 countries are gathered in Zambia for the 14th African Air Forces Symposium.
President Hakainde Hichilema, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force, has called upon the Air Forces across the continent to unite in providing humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and search and rescue operations.
Represented by Acting Defence Minister Douglas Syakalima, President Hichilema emphasized that by collaborating in these efforts, African Air Forces would pay tribute to the vision of Africa’s forefathers, who advocated for a united continent.
“We are ready to support and collaborate with the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF) in any necessary capacity. Together, we can ensure that our Air Forces are not only the guardians of our skies but also champions of hope and resilience for our people,” stated President Hichilema.
The President urged the delegates to leverage the AAAF as a demonstration of Africa’s strength and to let the Association serve as a beacon of what can be accomplished across the continent.
He also highlighted that climate change has significantly impacted Africa, with Zambia being especially affected. The President commended the Zambia Defence Force for its outstanding efforts in addressing hunger, which has been exacerbated by climate change.
“Here in Zambia, the Defence Forces, including the Zambia Air Force, have risen to the challenge of contributing to food security. I commend the Commander of the Zambia Air Force, who is also the Chairman of the Association of African Air Forces, for being open-minded and embracing the new role of combating all threats, including hunger,” said President Hichilema.
And the Chairman of the Association of African Air Forces, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, stated that African Air Forces have a dual mandate: to secure the skies over the continent and to provide humanitarian support during disasters.
