The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has identified critical gaps in the handling, maintenance, and regulation of gas cylinders and related equipment in the country, particularly following recent incidents.
ZACA’s Executive Director, Juba Sakala, expressed concern over gas cylinder explosions that have occurred on the Copperbelt.
“These incidents have resulted in injuries to consumers and posed significant risks to public safety,” he said.
Mr. Sakala emphasized that these events call for immediate and coordinated actions to prevent future accidents.
He pointed out that poor-quality gas cylinders often result from the presence of substandard or counterfeit products in the market, which can compromise safety.
Additionally, he noted that many consumers are unaware of the proper methods for using and storing gas cylinders.
“Cylinders and accessories such as valves and regulators may not undergo regular safety checks or servicing,” he said.
Mr. Sakala has urged regulatory authorities to intensify inspections to ensure that all gas cylinders on the market meet safety and quality standards.
He also called for increased penalties for suppliers and manufacturers found distributing substandard or counterfeit cylinders.
ZACA plans to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to launch nationwide sensitization campaigns focused on the safe handling, usage, and storage of gas cylinders, to provide clear and visible guidelines to consumers at points of sale.
Furthermore, ZACA appeals to consumers to prioritize safety by purchasing gas cylinders and accessories only from reputable suppliers and reporting any suspicious or defective products to the relevant authorities. This collective effort is essential for creating a safer environment for all.
