North-Western Province Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Education and Counseling Department Senior Investigations Officer, Rosalynn Hameja has called on parents to take children abusing drugs and alcohol for counselling at their offices.
Speaking during a sensitisation meeting in Kyalalankuba Ward, Ms Hameja said the Commission does not arrest teenagers who seek counselling services.
“I know most people think we just arrest but we also offer counselling services to teenagers who are addicted to drugs and we also test those suspected to be taking drugs,” she said.
Ms Hameja further said the community should report any suspect selling drugs as they are contributing to the high crime rate in the country.
“I want to encourage you to report any person who is selling drugs in your community as this is contributing to the high crime rates in our society, don’t feel pity for them because they do not pity your children,” Ms Hameja added.
Speaking at the same meeting, Kyalalankuba Ward Councilor, Davy Mubiana thanked the DEC for educating the public on the dangers of drugs.
Mr Mubiana said young people no longer have respect for the elderly in society due to the substances they are abusing.
Meanwhile, a senior Citizen in Kimiteto area, FebbyMutoka urged DEC to up their game in arresting all those who will be found wanting.
Mrs Mutoka said the society is no longer safe for the elderly as they are being harassed every time by the Junkies in the community.
