Eastern Province Education Officer, Brainely Malambo, has called on teachers in the region to immediately start teaching as schools open today, February 12, 2024.
Mr Malambo says teachers must not wait for next week to start teaching as there was no time to waste.
Speaking when he visited selected schools in Chadiza over the weekend to check their readiness for opening, Mr Malambo expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness for most schools in the area.
“Gone are the days when the first day and week, children were not learning as it was treated as a cleaning week,” he said.
Mr Malambo expressed confidence that the province will produce good results despite the delay of opening schools caused by the Cholera outbreak.
“I know that schools are delayed to open due to the outbreak of Cholera but I also know that you are equal to the task as the delay will not be felt,” he emphasised.
And Chadiza District Education Board Secretary, Lawrence Nyirenda, said Chadiza is one of the districts that receives many children from as far as Lusaka for boarding schools.
“We know that Lusaka is an epicenter for Cholera that is why we have put measures in place,” Mr Nyirenda said.
He disclosed that the office had erected a tent to be used for screening children as they report to Chadiza Boarding School.
“The multisectoral team has continued to engage and sensitise teachers on Cholera including symptoms for the benefit of the school and learners,” he said.
And Chadiza Boarding School Head Teacher, Samson Fanyana, said the school had mobilised the required Cholera prevention materials with support from the Ministry of Health.
“Some of the things the schools were given include granular chlorine, jik, soap, disinfectants among others,” he said.
Meanwhile, a parent, Joyce Ngoma, commended the PEO for monitoring the schools in Chadiza to ensure that they were adequately prepared for the opening.
Ms Ngoma urged the PEO to visit more schools in remote areas to ensure the delivery of quality education.
