VENDING remains illegal in Zambia and Lusaka is no exception, Lusaka City Council (LCC) Assistant Public Relations Manager Nyambe Bulumba has warned.
Commenting on concerns raised by the public over continued street vending despite being illegal, Mr. Bulumba told The Scoop, that the Council had continued with inspections to ensure the illegality was brought to an end.
He said in January this alone, 147 Street vendors were arrested and appeared before the Magistrate at the Fast Track court at the Civic Centre and that they were charged accordingly.
He explained the Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 12 of 2018 prohibited street vending and described it as a public nuisance, hence the need to curb it and warned that anyone founding vending will not be spared but face the law accordingly.
He said the local authority will not entertain any excuses from those breaking the law in the name of doing business illegally and that the removal of street vendors from the Central Business District (CBD) was due to sanitation issues and indiscriminate disposal garbage among other health issues.
“We urge people to engage the Council and apply for trading slots in designated trading areas to avoid being inconvenienced,” Mr Bulumba said.
