NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) president Saboi Imboela says it is disappointing that 55 years after independence, Zambia has never had a female president.
Ms. Imboela said in an interview that it was unfortunate that all the seven Presidents Zambia has produced were men despite women being majority voters.
The NDC president, however, said any of the women vying for presidency was ready to rule the country
“It is disappointing that we have not had a female President but everything has its own time and that time for that woman has come. If a woman is not elected in 2026, it will just be because there is another person not because women are not capable. In terms of capability and willingness and in terms of being ready, women are ready and have capacity to run this country,” Ms. Imboela said.
She said the hard work, compassion and the sacrifices women made in their homes was what they should take to the political space.
While much had been said about women working against each other, Ms. Imboela urged the female folk to support each other and ensure that one of them rules the country.
“Since Zambia got independence until now, in every election, we have more women voters than men. For the people that register and those that turn up to vote, it is always more women than men. So, if the women decide that this is the direction they want to go, then definitely a woman can be put into office as early as today,” she said.
She urged women to come out of their cocoons and contribute positively to the governance of the country.
“Men have a lot of confidence. Even if they are not good leaders at times, they will avail themselves but women may have everything it takes but the confidence levels are not what is expected and they take themselves away from what they can help out with,” she said.
