IT IS A NIGHTMARE TO OBTAIN A PASSPORT IN ZAMBIA

IF there is an office in Zambia where corruption is seemingly more prescribed than prohibited, it is the Passport Office and we wonder why investigative wings have not bothered to move in and carry out independent investigations on what is going on at that office.

It is a shame that in this age and era where technological advancements have made service delivery easy, one could wait for up to three months without getting a passport as long as such an individual elects to use the normal channel to obtain one.

The quickest way to obtain a passport in Zambia is by dealing with the errand boys those officers at the Passport Office use to engage in corrupt activities with those who need passports where money has to exchange hands before the service is rendered to the service.

In our country, even those who pay for express service get delayed from obtaining their documents and the only ones who are given the attention are those who oil the officers involved through their errand boys who lurk around that office.

The most annoying part is that there are even police officers who man that office and it is either they are blind to what is happening there or they are part of the rot and at the rate we are going as a country on that score, we must all be worried.

It is so annoying that those who elect to go the corruption way have the luxury of getting their documents the same day their details are submitted while those who decide to follow the normal procedure are purposefully delayed as they are told the office does not have the material for printing or their documents got lost.

This poses a significant threat to national security because in the process of expressly giving passports to individuals through corruption at the expense of those who follow the law, due diligence is not carried out and this means these documents may end up being issued to individuals with questionable backgrounds or false identities.

This has serious consequences, including facilitating illegal activities such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and terrorism. The difficulties and challenges faced by individuals trying to obtain a passport in Zambia are concerning and can have serious implications for those needing to travel for work, education, or personal reasons.

Long wait times, bureaucratic red tape, and potential corruption can all contribute to making the process frustrating and time-consuming.

The delays and challenges faced by individuals needing to obtain passports in Zambia can have serious consequences, particularly for patients who require urgent medical treatment abroad. The inability to obtain a passport in a timely manner can result in delays in receiving necessary medical care, potentially worsening the patient’s condition and putting their health at risk.
