LOCAL Authorities must actively engage with the community, particularly market traders, to conduct comprehensive safety awareness campaigns and increase fire safety in trading places, 2026 aspiring Kitwe Mayor Charles Kabwita has observed

In an interview, Mr. Kabwita said there was a need for Engineering Departments and those responsible for fire management practices to collaborate with the Housing Social Services Department, which oversees markets and bus stations.

Mr. Kabwita said together, they can educate traders on the importance of fire safety during and after using electrical equipment such as welding machines, popcorn machines, salon equipment, and other devices crucial for their businesses.

“This initiative is vital for safeguarding our markets from the risk of fire. By fostering a culture of safety consciousness among traders, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of such tragic incidents,” Mr. Kabwita said.

He said it was imperative that the Councils invested in enhancing fire resilience by procuring additional fire engines and equipping the Fire Departments adequately.

He charged that this will ensure a prompt and effective response to any fire emergencies, minimizing damage to life and property.

He pointed out that the recent devastating fires that engulfed market shelters in Kitwe’s Chamboli market and Lusaka’s Kabwata main market underscored the urgent need for improved fire safety awareness and precautions among the traders.

He added that as the nation had continued to experience load shedding, it was crucial that traders, especially those who relied on electricity for their businesses, were educated on essential safety measures.

“Let us take these proactive steps to protect our markets, traders and the broader community from the devastating impact of fires,” he said.
