MINING expert Edward Simukonda says once operational, the new mine by Changa Resources will create employment for Mokambo residents in Mufulira.
The Copperbelt Energy Cooperation (CEC) is preparing to launch a US$ 7 million power project in the Mokambo area of Mufulira District to facilitate the development of a new copper mine by Changa Resources Limited.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Simukonda said the area was known for bad vices such as smuggling but that once the mine was operational, it would create employment for many youths in the area.
He said the country needed more investors in the mining sector to improve the economy and observed that Zambia had many minerals that needed more exploration and mining.
The mining expert stated that the more mines that the country opened, the better for the economy and described CEC as the major grid investor in the country.
He said the Government should allow more players in the power industry to compete with Zesco to improve the country’s power generation.
“It is encouraging to see a company that is able to compete with Zesco on the market. This will lead to a big improvement on the part of Zesco in the way they do business,” he said.
During a stakeholders consultative meeting in Mufulira, CEC Project Consultant, Adrian Sinkala disclosed that the Mokambo Grid Connection project was slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024 if it was approved by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).
