Mining Expert Edward Simukonda says it will take time before benefits are seen from the re-operation of Konkola Copper Mine and Mopani Copper Mines.
Mr Simukonda said this is so because there are lot of things that have to be put in place before the two mines are able to fully function.
He explained that for mines that were dormant for some time there is need for certain machinery to be replaced, human resource to be hired and other things to be put in place.
“For mines that were not functioning for some time it’s not possible for them to start normal operations just like that because there are a lot of things that will have to be put in order,” said Mr Simukonda
Mr Simukonda said the two mines need at least two years before they can start fully functioning again and able to contribute to the country’s increased copper production.
And Mr Simukonda said the two mines once fully functioning can contribute significantly to the country’s 4. Million metric tonnes copper tonnage target.
He said increasing tonnage for the country is a far-fetched goal but very possible with determination and the right steps taken.
“Our mining industry has so much potential and increasing tonnage is possible but not anytime soon,” said Mr Simukonda
And Mr Simukonda said the two mines will contribute significantly to the country’s economic development once they start operating fully.
He said this is because jobs would be created which will mean an income for the people.
