Women in Lufwanyama District have ventured into exporting citrus trees to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Zambia Centre for Horticulture Training officer Musenga Silwawa told The Scoop in an interview that the women have been ordering the citrus plants from the training centre and exporting them to the DRC.
Mr. Silwawa said the citrus plants have been on demand in that country and that the women, through a cooperative, had been buying the plants every two weeks and that the development had improved the lives of women in the district.
And vice principal Richard Chirwa said the training centre has been offering training to both pupils and those who had dropped out of school in horticulture as long as they were able to read and write.
Mr. Chirwa said the institution had been offering short and long term training to the public and that the centre had been advocating for sustainable farming among farmers in the district.
“We have been offering training to our farmers on sustainable agriculture to grow crops under harsh conditions due to the effects of climate change. As an institution, we are offering tailor-made training and diploma courses to school levers,” Mr. Chirwa said.
He explained that the institution, which operates in Lufwanyama District, has been offering training since the 1970s.
