A RESIDENT has praised the Government for restoring sanity at Chunga Dumpsite in Matero Constituency.

Speaking in an interview with The Scoop, Miriam Chanda said there was order at Chunga Dumpsite and that it was no longer posing a health hazard.

Ms. Chanda said this was because last month, the Government built a wall fence around the dumping site

“There is a lot of improvement at Chunga dumpsite. The wall fence around the site was constructed hence all the garbage that was laying around was put inside,” Ms. Chanda said.

She explained that the Zambia National Service (ZNS) had also upgraded the road that leads to the dumpsite.

“After the wall fence was constructed, the ZNS moved in to rehabilitate the road that leads to Chunga Dumpsite. They added gravel on top of the existing road so trucks are moving smoothly without damaging the roads. Even if it is raining, water moves by the side of the road. We have no problem anymore,” she said.

Asked if nearby residents were still experiencing bad smell from the dumpsite, Mrs Chanda said local authorities splayed chemicals at the dumpsite every month to reduce the risk of diseases and prevent the release of bad stench.

“We only experience bad smell when they are burning the garbage but that scent goes away after one to four hours,” she explained.

And Ms. Chanda said collection of waste material for recycling at the dumpsite was now being done orderly.

“In the past, people were rushing for trucks as soon as they arrived at the site to dump refuse to get polythene and other products for recycling purposes. In the process, they were dropping the waste material on the ground. However, the scenario has changed as people have been given rules to get the waste materials in an orderly way. The place is now looking clean,” she said.
