SOLWEZI Municipal Council in collaboration with Zambia Police and the Veterinary Department has eliminated a total of 54 stray dogs in an effort to protect residents in communities.
According to the media statement issued by the Public Relations department, this was during an exercise which was conducted from February, 5th to 15th 2024.
The local authority has also bemoaned low compliance by residents in terms of registration of dogs despite efforts to sensitize members of the public on the importance of dog registration.
The Local Authority says so far, 68 dogs have been registered in the first quarter of this year which is however very low in comparison to 219 dogs vaccinated with the veterinary department from January 2024 to date.
“During the same exercise, it was also observed that most dog owners do not confine and care for their dog as guided by the Control of Dogs Act Cap 237 of the Laws of Zambia. Dog owners are therefore advised to have their dogs vaccinated, registered and confined within their premises to avoid any form of public nuisances,” the statement has indicated.
Some of the areas visited include; Low density, Kandundu, College area, Hospital compound, Cheshire area, Mukuba, Mushitala, Kabitaka housing, Kimale, Weighbridge, Messenger, Kimpwena, Stadium, Kazomba, Mitech, Magrade, Zambia and Urban, among others.
The Local Authority said it will remain committed to eliminating all stray and unlicensed dogs every quarter of the year.
