A 31-year-old man of Lavushimanda District in Muchinga Province has axed his wife to death for trying to divorce him.

The 27-year-old woman, identified as Idah Mutale, was axed at the back of her neck while she was having lunch with her two children aged 8 and 3 and sustained a fatal deep cut.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale says investigations indicate that the deceased had marital disputes and misunderstandings with her husband identified as Kennedy Kabwe in their year-old marriage.

Mr. Mwale says as a result, the victim suggested to her husband that they should dissolve the marriage.

He says on April 26, 2024, the couple is alleged to have had the usual marital disputes which made the wife to tell her father to return the dowry so that the marriage could be ended and that her father promised to give back the dowry today, Sunday, April 28, 2024.

He however says yesterday around 13:00 hours, while she was eating nshima with her two children, her husband asked if she still maintained her decision of ending the marriage to which she responded positively.

“It is alleged that Mr. Kabwe immediately got an axe and hacked his wife on the back of the neck and ran away. The 8-year-old child quickly informed her grandfather about the incident who later alerted police officers at Lavushimanda Police Post.

“Police officers rushed to the scene and found the victim lying in a pool of blood outside the house. She was rushed to Mpumba Mini Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her body was deposited in the same Hospital mortuary waiting for post-mortem examination,” Mr. Mwale.

He said an axe and a knife were found at the scene and that a manhunt for the suspect has been launched.
