EDGAR Lungu is a spent force and not a threat in political circles, says Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Acting Spokesperson Brendel Philip.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Philip said the MMD did not consider Mr. Lungu as a threat to the ruling United Party for National Development(UPND).
“We, in MMD, don’t consider Edgar Lungu as a threat. I will be safe to say he is a spent force and I think he must just rest and enjoy his time as a retired Statesman. I don’t think the step to get back into the political arena was a good step. I think he was ill advised. We in the MMD don’t consider him a threat.
“The United Kwacha Alliance(UKA) has cracks because the leaders of political parties are power-hungry. I have my doubts over the UKA and the simple reason being that all those political party leaders are power-hungry. So, there is a struggle in the position of UKA president,” Mr. Philip said.
He, however, said democracy entails that there was formation of political alliances.
“The Alliance way is the way to go. Everywhere in the world, people are forging alliances because they have discovered that through unity; through combining forces, there is more that we can achieve as opposed to working in isolation,” he said.
He said part of the reasons alliances failed to work was to garner consensus with regards to who would be floated in the general elections.
“Just like I highlighted, everyone is power-hungry and in the long-run, alliances never work out but they would work out if they generate consensus over who should be floated,” he said.
