LUSAKA IN MAIZE GALORE

… As DMMU moves in to provide 200 metric tonnes of the commodity to alleviate the hunger situation exacerbated by the drought which has hit the country

THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has given Lusaka District 200 metric tonnes of maize in a bid to avert the hunger situation in the country.

Lusaka Province District Commissioner (DC) Rosa Zulu in an interview said that the DMMU had allocated 200 metric tonnes to her office in order to avert the drought which had hit the country.

Ms. Zulu said that the province would be receiving the maize quarterly and that 80 percent would be given to people that would work for it through the programme called food for work which meant that people needed to do some form of work for them to be given food.

She said that the other 20 percent would be allocated to vulnerable people that could not do any form of work.

“What we have done is come up with a formula that will see people do some form of work and afterwards they would be given the relief food as a reward but also we have allocated 20 percent to vulnerable people that can’t work,” she said.

She said that the move was aimed at combating the drought situation that had hit most parts of the country. She expressed confidence that the move would yield positive results as it would also encourage hard work.

“We are going to be receiving relief food from the DMMU which will be given quarterly so that we can avert the drought which hit the country severely,” she said.
