CORRUPTION has continued ravaging societies in Zambia and there is need for the New Dawn Administration to increase its efforts in fighting the vice in order to hasten the country’s progress towards economic prosperity, the opposition Leadership Movement (LM) has said.
LM secretary general Jairos Ngoma alleged that Zambia has had a devastating experience with government officials frequently engaging in corrupt acts with impunity.
Mr. Ngoma noted with sadness that most of Zambians were living in abject poverty because of corruption
He told The Scoop that high poverty levels due to corruptionin the country remained a threat to many households.
“The best the New Dawn Administration can do is put in place strong measures that will get rid of corruption which has continued to be the main contributor to most Zambia living in poverty as it takes away resources meant for enhancing economic development,” he said.
He also urged the government to revive cases on the expired drug, and many other offences that took place in the previous government with the view to hold everyone accountable.
Mr. Ngoma further said that the agriculture sector was crucial in reducing poverty, adding that the government should ensure that the sector received the much-needed attention.
“It is concerning that to date poverty in the country remains a threat to many households. As a country, we need to enhance the agricultural sector to effectively combat poverty by ensuring that farmers receive inputs on time and during diseases or fall army worms, farmers receive the needed solutions as quickly as possible,” Mr. Ngoma said.
He said that implementing long-term solutions to reduce hunger in the country could also help address challenges of cholera as many citizens would be able to eat and drink water from well-established facilities unlike the current situation where there was so much dirt in some compounds.
