The Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) has acknowledged the recent decision by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Acting Director General, Mrs. Monica Chipanta Chansa, to join the prosecution team in the high-profile case involving former Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr. Kennedy Malama and seven others.
CTPD executive director Isaac Mwaipopo said the decision highlights the challenges Zambia was facing due to corruption and underscores the need for a relentless and comprehensive approach to addressing such cases.
Mr Mwaipopo said a comprehensive strategy was required to effectively fight corruption, saying beyond prosecuting cases, the government should also consider focusing some of its efforts to strengthening the capacity of law enforcement agencies and implementing transparency measures on the management of forfeited properties and resources.
‘The Acting Director General’s involvement not only demonstrates a commitment to the cause on corruption, but it also goes a long way in promoting transparency and accountability from all those granted the sacred privilege to serve the Zambian people.
CTPD views this involvement as a positive sign of leadership and encourages other Senior law enforcement officials to consider adopting a similar leadership approach in their respective roles,’ he said.
While this approach by the Acting Director General was commendable, Mr Mwaipopo said CTPD would like to stress the importance of ensuring that the fight against corruption remained non- selective, adding the need to address both past and present cases with the same level of vigor.
