Preparations for the Kuomboka Ceremony of the Lozi people in the Western Province, scheduled for this weekend, are well underway.
Western Province Minister Kapelwa Mbangweta (MP) has encouraged the public to attend this year’s traditional event in large numbers as the nation continues to promote its cultural values and tourism sector.
He made these remarks during a joint press briefing with officials from the Zambia Police, the Ministry of Health, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Minister announced that Republican President Hakainde Hichilema is expected to attend the ceremony on Saturday.
“From the business community to all attendees, I urge everyone to uphold order, innovation, and unity of purpose as we celebrate our rich cultural heritage this weekend.
This is an excellent opportunity for the business community to invest in the hospitality industry to accommodate the influx of visitors, not only during the Kuomboka Ceremony but beyond,” he said.
Western Province Commissioner of Police David Chileshe assured all attendees that the Zambia Police Service, in collaboration with other security forces, has intensified patrols day and night across the province to ensure a safe and secure environment during the event.
Additionally, Acting Provincial Health Director Dr. Loveday Mwila confirmed that the Ministry of Health has enhanced healthcare services throughout the ceremony.
“We have outlined several activities focusing on disease surveillance, health education, and prevention. In particular, we plan to distribute 2 million condoms during this period, with over 300,000 already distributed across 46 hotspots, including bars and guesthouses,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Imanga Kayama, president of the Western Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged the business community to maintain fair pricing during Kuomboka.
She emphasized that businesses should avoid exploiting visitors and instead offer reasonable prices as the province welcomes an influx of people for the celebration.
This year’s Kuomboka Ceremony will be held under the theme: “Kuomboka – More Than Just a Migration.”
