THERE is a prolonged dry spell in Siavonga District, Southern Province and if this situation persists, crop production for this farming season will be greatly affected, area District Commissioner (DC) Geoffrey Jacopo has said.
Mr. Jacopo told The Scoop in an interview that the district had been experiencing dry spells.
He said it was his prayer that the drought situation did not prolong as it might compound the hunger situation in the area.
“There situation here is that we have had no rains for quite a long time and if this situation persists, crop production for this farming season will be greatly affected. Therefore, it is our prayer that it rains more so that we have good crop yield this year,” he said.
Mr. Jacopo has since encouraged the people in the district to venture into fish farming which was generally doing well.
“My appeal is for the people of Siavonga to venture into fish farming. As you know, fish farming is a source of livelihood here in Siavonga. We have no problem with water because the source is Zambezi River in North-Western,” he said.
Mr. Jacopo added that people must take advantage of the conducive environment in Siavonga to keep cattle and goats.
“The climatic condition for cattle and goat layering in Siavonga is very conducive. Hence, let’s take advantage and keep more goats and cattle to improve both our nutrition and economic welfare,” he advised.
