LUSAKA Province District Commissioner Rosa Zulu has charged that there are politicians in the province that are funding and sponsoring junkies who in turn are terrorising people.
Ms. Zulu in an interview said that she was aware that certain politicians were giving hand-outs to the junkies and even street kids for them to cause havoc.
She said the problem had gotten out of hand as the street kids and junkies were clamping down on anyone that was found at night but warned the perpetrators to stop the habit of sponsoring the junkies because the law would catch up with them soon.
“It is common knowledge that some politicians are funding these junkies because there is no way that these boys and girls can have money when they do not work,” she said.
She said that she was working hand-in-hand with the police to ensure that the culprits were brought to book before the problem escalated.
She said that her office was also working with the Ministry of Community Development to remove the street kids but that all this was in vain.
“We got the street kids out of the streets and took them to the camps but what they did was they ran away and still went back,” she said.
She said the Government would not sit idle and watch politicians take advantage of vulnerable children by inciting them to cause havoc.
She said that the law would catch up with them and that the police would soon carry out a clean-up exercise to ensure that the streets were free of junkies.
She said she had no kind words for the junkies who had defied the Government’s efforts of trying to give them a better future.
